What People Are Saying About PEJE

As we approach our 15th anniversary and prepare for an exciting leadership transition this fall, never have we been more committed to our mission of creating financially sustainable and affordable Jewish day schools—nor more prepared to take action. The truth is that Jewish communities need Jewish day schools, and Jewish day schools need PEJE.

Many of you have responded to our sharpened  focus. We are privileged to share your commentary. Here’s what people are saying about PEJE and about the state of the day school field.

Day Schools build Jewish community and our Jewish future. I encourage the conversation of how to send more along paths that continue to reinvigorate us as a people. I can guarantee you that . . . our region's Jewish community would not be as diverse and rich if those visionaries who formed PEJE, and guiding lights like Josh Elkin, had not been there when we needed them.

Dean Goldfein, Head of School
Contra Costa Jewish Day School
Lafayette, CA
The P in PEJE stands for much more than Partnership. PEJE is: A Provider of much needed leadership learning for lay and professionals. A Public advocate for Jewish day schools with local and national officials. A Proponent and catalyst for data-driven decision making. A Professionally run organization that sets the standard to which we all aspire. And most importantly, A Pillar of the field of Jewish day school education. We are proud to be programmatic partners with PEJE in so many schools and communities throughout North America.
Scott J. Goldberg , Director
Yeshiva University Institute for University-School Partnership
New York, NY
Since its establishment, I and my colleagues have had the privilege to witness and experience the profound impact PEJE has had on the quality and culture of Jewish day school education ... The true test of an organization's effectiveness in any industry is the impact of that organization on its clients. PEJE [has] an impeccable reputation ... and a true vision anchored in 21st century reality.
Dr. Chaim Botwinick, President and CEO
Center for the Advancement of Jewish Education
Miami, FL

I recently received a copy of each of your new publications--Strategic Annual Campaigns, Toward Increased Enrollment, and Maximizing Community Collaboration. They are fantastic not only because of their design but because they are so content rich! They are really almost like workbooks or how-to manuals. I really appreciate PEJE's effort in pulling them together.

Amy Z. Amiel, Senior Program Director
SAMIS Foundation
Seattle, WA
In Los Angeles, the New Community Jewish High School … stands as one of many examples of extraordinary growth and sustainability, all built upon the qualitative foundation promoted by PEJE on a national level. PEJE’s vision set the stage for making all of our schools serious, independent, professionally run enterprises . . . The impact over time has been and will be enormous. May PEJE "Live long and prosper." It has developed something rare, "True Greatness."
Dr. Bruce Powell, Head of School
New Community Jewish High School
West Hills, CA
Josh Elkin has led PEJE from its inception to become a major force in Jewish education, helping Jewish educators and professionals learn, grow, and shape future generations.
Jerry Silverman, President and CEO
The Jewish Federations of North America
New York, NY
PEJE has made a tremendous impact on the field by holding up models of professional excellence and challenging the entire field to seek much higher standards. It has also been the major, catalyzing voice behind impressive work across denominational lines and a source for the renaissance in pluralism within a critical sector of our educational community.
Dr. Allen Selis, Head of School
Solomon Schechter Day School of St. Louis
St. Louis, MO
The increased investment by local philanthropists in their day schools has far more than doubled in the years since PEJE was founded. . . It is also important to note that PEJE is now modeling what many Jewish institutions can follow. They are remaining committed to their original mission while undergoing a thorough process of self-reflection and evaluation that has led to new strategic thinking and new planning to answer the current needs of the Jewish Day School Community.
Jonathan Cannon, Head of School
Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School
Rockville, MD
There are not enough words to describe the changes that PEJE has brought to Jewish Day School education, both in terms of institutions and personnel
Mollie Aczel, PEJE Coach

Thank you, PEJE, for your unparalleled devotion and passion to uplifting, strengthening and in many ways transforming Jewish day school education. I know there is so much left to be done, but it is almost mind-boggling to think of where the field is today compared to where it was in 1996.
Kim Hirsh, Development Officer
Jewish Community Foundation of MetroWest NJ
Whippany, NJ
PEJE and those committed to pluralistic Jewish day school education are laying the foundation for the Jewish future . . . In ten years, JCHS has grown from just 16 students at our college-prep high school to more than 180 students. I can hardly imagine accomplishing that growth without PEJE and its vital nationwide advocacy for Jewish day schools.
Rabbi Howard Ruben, Head of School
Jewish Community High School of the Bay
San Francisco, CA
PEJE . . . was a guiding force that built a Jewish day school in South Florida. Whether it be mentoring, grants, or conferences, Hochberg Prep has accomplished many of its accolades because of PEJE. I cannot thank you enough.
Dr. Richard Cuenca, Head of School
Hochberg Preparatory School
North Miami Beach, FL
It has been a terrific experience working with [the PEJE] staff. You have created a very special organization and Los Angeles and the rest of the country has very much benefited from your vision, wisdom and commitment to Jewish Day schools.
Miriam Prum Hess, Director
Centers for Excellence in Day School Education & Education Engagement (BJE)
Los Angeles, CA
PEJE contributed to the professionalization of the day school movement. More heads of school are now paid a respectable salary. Administrators can benchmark their school's performance against other Jewish day schools; data now exist to make these comparisons. Boards of trustees can benefit from best practices in governance because training and research are available. Admissions directors and development directors have communities of professionals with whom they can share experience and gain advice. [The quality of the experience] has increased dramatically. I credit PEJE for that!
Rabbi Lee Buckman, Head of School
Katherine & Jacob Greenfield Hebrew Academy of Atlanta
Atlanta, GA
Rabbi Elkin has been the most important and key leader in building the culture of excellence in day schools... PEJE's most important contribution to the field [has been] the professionalization of day school education in North America and the raising of the bar in all areas of Jewish independent school governance, finance, and planning.
Rabbi Steven M. Brown, Ed.D, Head of School
Jack M. Barrack Hebrew Academy
Bryn Mawr, PA
The contribution of PEJE to increasing the level of professionalism in the day school field has been immense. There is no substitute for full-time Jewish education. Other programs — camps, birthright etc. — are extremely valuable. But they are no substitute: it is like saying that if we have a local state college we don't need Harvard, Yale, MIT, Oxford or Cambridge. Our school — 85% non-orthodox — shows that it can be done.
Paul Shaviv , Director of Education
TanenbaumCHAT
Toronto, ON
What I learned from PEJE sources, PEJE consultants, publications, conferences, and personal exchanges with Josh [Elkin] and other members of his staff has had a tremendous impact on how effective I am in my job. Moreover, the expertise available through PEJE has been a major source for training for many other members of my staff, allowing us to become professional experts in areas such as advancement, admissions, and business management, areas in which there was a vacuum of learning opportunities before the creation of PEJE.
Naomi Reem , Head of School
Jewish Primary Day School of the Nation’s Capital
Washington, DC
PEJE’s "Beyond the Gala" conference was, hands-down, one of the most relevant and practical conferences I have ever attended — within both the Jewish and the corporate environments. I am so impressed with PEJE and grateful for its ability and commitment to helping development professionals become more effective and efficient.
Joanne Helperin, Development & Marketing Manager
YULA
Los Angeles, CA
PEJE evolved in the past two years to focus relentlessly on … financial sustainability. Now, schools across the country are beginning to plan for and implement programs to sustain schools. Maybe we all need to "re-boot" our efforts to (1) remind funders why this matters, (2) engage parents to ask what they want, and (3) make it a reality. PEJE is one tool to do that.
Dan Cohen, Principal
Full Court Press
Los Angeles, CA
Before PEJE, there was no address for Jewish day school advocacy. There was no place to turn for expertise or for models of professionalism. There was no Jewish day school movement. To a very significant degree, PEJE created all that. It changed the landscape. It normalized the idea of non-Orthodox day school as a legitimate option and an important investment in future Jewish leadership.
Jon Levisohn, Assistant Director
Mandel Center for Studies in Jewish Education, Braindeis University
Waltham, MA
I applaud PEJE's ability to reflect on their own goals and to remake itself to meet the needs of the schools. I celebrate those who do make the investment to send their children to day school and want them to have the best education in Jewish and General studies. I am so grateful to PEJE for helping me learn and grow as a leader so that I can best serve this school.
Jane Taubenfeld Cohen, Head of School
South Area Solomon Schechter Day School
